Celebrate Yule: Feasting, Festivities, & Rebirth for the Winter Solstice

Yule Season and the Winter Solstice, is such a wonderful and magical turn of the wheel.

A season blanketed in warmth, love, giving and unity. A time when the world celebrates, the light returns and the human spirit shines.

Winter is official and it’s time for rest. Rest for Mother Nature as well as for yourself. A time to reflect, regroup and rejuvenate.

What is Yule?

Yule celebrations begin each year to coincide with the Winter Solstice, the first official day of winter, on December 21st.

The Winter Solstice is the shortest day and longest night of the year before the sun’s return, and the days begin to get progressively longer again until the Summer Solstice.

Yule is a celebration honouring the rebirth of the sun and another turn of the wheel.

Celebrations happen around the solstice all over the world to welcome back the sun and the onset of winter.

The time is widely considered as a moment for feasting, merriment, honouring nature, rebirth and reflection.

Yule History & Traditions

Yule has been around for thousands of years and the Celtic Pagans honoured this time long before the word came into play.

There are many discussions surrounding the origins of Yule and it is hard to pinpoint exactly when it began.

Very early customs of the Celtic Pagans are not well known. There is, however, much significance put on Norse, Roman, and Germanic traditions that the Celtic Pagans seem to have took on along the way and as the celebration progressed.

Yule celebrations begin on the night of the solstice and go for 12 days (hence the 12 days of Christmas).

There are many traditions associated with the season. In early times, people would dress up as the spirits of gods and go through the villages mumming (acting out plays).

They would be rewarded with food and drink for their efforts. Our modern version of this would be caroling.

Decorating was also a big part of the festivities. People of all walks would use evergreen boughs and a tree, holly, mistletoe, and candles to get their homes into the spirit.

One very important tradition is that of the Yule Log. People would travel into the woods to find the largest log they could and this is what would be used to light huge hearth fires in the households.

It was decorated in greenery and a piece of the log from the previous Yule was used as kindling to start the fire for the new log. The fire would burn for the full 12 days of celebrations and represented the light of the sun.

And Then Came Christmas…

Yule is, perhaps surprisingly, not one of the great Sabbats in the Pagan calendar.

However, we also have Christmas, which was essentially invented to make the transition into Christianity an easier one for people of the time who were already used to celebrating at this time of year.

Bringing Christmas into the mix has made the time of Yule a much bigger deal and as such it holds a very special place in the heart of many Pagans, including this one 🙂

Yule is one of my absolute favourite times of year. And we also celebrate Christmas in our house…now our celebrations have nothing to do with baby Jesus and everything to do with the traditions that come with it. It’s just how I was raised lol 😉

So, we honour the Solstice and use the term Yule, we have the tree, decorations, gift giving, feasting, family time, rest and reflection. In my opinion, a happy marriage between the two holidays and a time so filled with positive energy and joy I can’t help but have a soft spot for all of it.

Ways to Celebrate

As we have established, Yule is a pretty special sabbat with unique and gorgeous traditions.

The beauty of the season is not only in the meaning but also in the atmosphere of warmth and light that is created around us at this time.

So, here are a few ideas to get you going on your own celebrations 🙂

Decorate a Yule Tree

One of my favourite parts of the holiday! Whether you go to the forest and chop down your own or purchase one an artificial one, whether it be big or small; make it grand, beautiful, and personal to you.

It is a beacon of the holiday and should bring you joy, happiness, and beauty.

Enjoy Festive Activities

Go caroling, walk around the neighbourhoods and take in the lights, hit up a holiday gathering, plan get togethers with friends, create DIY gifts and decorations, watch festive movies, listen to festive music…be joyous and be creative!

Build your Yule Altar

Transform your altar or set up a dedicated one to Yule. Fill it with some of those symbols I mentioned above. Make it meaningful, inspiring and yours.

Perform a Ritual

Performing a ritual to honour the turn of the wheel, the return of the light, and rebirth is customary.

It can be simple or elaborate; you can incorporate the burning of your Yule Log (more on that below) or simply light a candle and say a blessing.

Whatever actions feel right to you, and whatever you choose, do it with heart and create your own magick.

Have a Feast

What Sabbat is complete without one really lol and food is a huge part of Yule!

The perfect time to feast and be merry; invite your nearest and dearest, indulge and treat your self to the special, delicious foods of the season.

Burn a Yule Log

Now we may not all have fireplaces like the days of old but we can create our own Yule Log using candles instead.

Its also no longer recommended letting it burn for 12 days, nor would it be possible but you can light it on the solstice before completing your ritual (if you do one) and let them either burn all the way down or until bedtime (safety first!).

There are tutorials online on how to create your own Yule Log or you can purchase one if DIY is just not your thing. No judgement here!

Bake Solstice Cookies

Yes! No Yule holiday is complete without cookies!

If you don’t have a traditional family recipe that is made religiously each year, check out Pinterest for some seriously stellar recipes for all tastes.

A Season of Giving

Volunteer at a shelter, soup kitchen or donate to the homeless. Give to those who do not have as much as you do and help spread the love, light and cheer this holiday season.

Exchanging gifts with loved ones is also a much loved custom.

Take a Moment to Reflect

This is a time of death and rebirth. Take some time to reflect on the things in your life you are ready to let go of and what new things you would like to welcome.

Prepare yourself to fully let go, release the old, and make room for the new. Set new intentions, think about what you would like to accomplish, and what new things you would like to start.

So indeed, Tis the Season

In the spirit of the season, be joyful, be present and appreciate all that is around you.

There is no other time of year that is quite as warm (metaphorically of course lol) and filled with beautiful bright light and kind spirits.

Cherish the time, the memories, the return of the sun, and be grateful. Use your time for self reflection and rebirth. Let the old unnecessary things in your life die fully to allow space for the new.

Let your soul, your energies, be rejuvenated and fully open to all of the possibilities and adventures that are to come.

I want to hear from you!

Samhain: Witches, Winter & A New Year

It has finally arrived, the best, most wonderful month of the year! Yes my magical friends, its October. And that means it’s time to celebrate Samhain!

The time when the air is crisp, the trees are awash in the fiery colours of fall, the sweaters come out, you can feel mother nature changing all around you and it is always lovely having a hot beverage in your hands.

It is time for the Witches New Year and Samhain! A month does not get more perfect than October.

Hence, it simply must be the season of the witch my dears 😉

What is Samhain?

Samhain, meaning ‘end of summer’ goes by many names. All Hallows Eve, Halloween, and the Witches New Year to name a few.

This Sabbat is one of the biggest and most anticipated of the Pagan celebrations. It is also the end of the Celtic year, hence being known as the Witches New Year.

So, a few facts: Samhain falls on October 31st, is the third of the harvest festivals, and pays homage to the oncoming darker part of the year.

It is also the second night of the year where the veil between worlds is thinned, along with Beltane. Therefore, making this a prime time to communicate with the other side and honour your ancestors who have passed on.

Samhain: A Little History

Samhain has a rich and wonderful history (our modern Halloween traditions had to come from somewhere right?).

In Celtic countries it was known as ‘The Feast of the Dead’. Food was left on altars and doorsteps for the spirits. This was the night when the dead roamed freely about the earth.

Sometimes single candles were lit and left in windows to help guide the dead on their journey. While some set out extra dinner plates around the table for departed loved ones to once again take their place among them.  The fae folk were said to be particularly active playing tricks and it was ill advised to walk the streets after dark. Maybe, some things are sounding oddly familiar? 😉

At this point in the season any crops that were left in the fields were not to be eaten but were offered to the nature spirits at Samhain.

There were huge bonfires built, known as ‘bone fires’. The bones from the evenings feasts were thrown into the fire, hence the name, bone fire.

People then lit their hearths from the fires to symbolize unity. Then the ashes were used to bless and protect the fields throughout the darker months.

Symbols of Samhain

The symbols of Samhain are strong. They are some of the most recognizable of all the Sabbats, in my totally unbiased opinion lol.

So, I have put together here some elements and ideas that I hope will help you to make a most magickal and memorable Samhain celebration.

Uniquely magickal and uniquely yours.

Ways to Celebrate Samhain

There are so many possibilities for celebrating Samhain!

Here are a few of my favourites to help ring in the day and night. And month if I am being honest lol.

Perform Some Samhain House Magick

As this is the start of the Witches New Year it is a great time to do some magick within your home.

Do a cleansing ritual, sweep away the negativity, or protect your home with pumpkins. Whatever methods you feel best to rejuvenate and refresh your space for the coming months of winter.

Also, I tend to prefer this time of year to do deep cleaning as opposed to the whole Spring cleaning craze.

The coming months are the ones where we spend the most time inside our humble abodes. It makes sense to make it as positive and cozy as you can before that happens.

Carve a Jack-o-lantern

A long loved, and oh so fun tradition!

Grab a pumpkin, a carving knife and your creativity and see what you come up with. I am awful at carving pumpkins lol. It is so difficult for me! However, October just doesn’t seem complete without it.

Putting lit pumpkins outside of your home comes from the tradition of helping guide the spirits on their journeys.

Build your Samhain Altar

As always you can transform your altar or set up a dedicated one to this day.

Fill it with some of herbs,  crystals and other items I mentioned above. Perhaps also add some elements that honour departed loved ones.

Make it beautiful and make it yours.

Perform a Ritual for your Ancestors

Perform a ritual to honour and speak with your beloveds that have passed on.

This night is all about the dead and with the veil thinned there is no better time to reach out to them.

Host a Dumb Supper

Host a supper in honour of your ancestors where nobody speaks but instead sit in quiet contemplation and remembrance.

Cook recipes passed down from your family and set a place at the table for your ancestors to ‘join’ you.

Out With the Old

Last but not least, reflect and let go of all the things that no longer hold purpose in your life.

This is the start of a new year with fresh new beginnings. Letting things go is essential for growth, happiness, and moving forward.

Sit quietly and meditate on your life, where you are, and what you might like to change.

Align yourself with new focus and re-design your goal plan. Start this year feeling light, rejuvenated and positive.

In Conclusion

Take stock of what you have, be grateful, and make your ancestors proud. Celebrate them with wine, pie and cherished memories.

Ring in this new year with joy, purpose, and love. And if you are anything like me you will make these moments last all October long.

As mentioned in the beginning of this post, it truly is the season of the Witch.

Embrace it darlings, it is a part of who you are and it is our time <3

Your turn! Tell me your Samhain wishes!

What does Samhain mean to you? Do you have any favourite traditions or will this be your first time celebrating? I always love to hear your thoughts, so please leave a comment or drop me a line. There are lots of ways for us to connect 🙂

Becoming Vegan: Switching to a Plant-Based Diet

If you haven’t heard the terms ‘vegan’ or ‘plant-based’ at this point you very well may be living under a rock lol. These terms have come into vogue and I must say, it’s about time.

So you’ve heard the buzz, but it’s likely just left you with questions. Things like, why should I become vegan? What are the benefits of being vegan? How do I start being vegan? Or, isn’t being vegan expensive? I hear you. I have been you.

With thoughts of veganism comes questions, lots of them.

I hope to do just that with this post. Answer some of those burning questions you have and ease your mind a bit. And just maybe by the end you’ll be inspired to jump into a new plant-based lifestyle!

And, yes things seem daunting at first. However, it is not all so mysterious or difficult once you start digging in to what it all means. And here you are 🙂

Times They Are A Changing

Oh my, yes, times are indeed changing. Veganism has entered the mainstream. It is now easier than ever before to be Vegan in our society, especially in a big city centre.

In the last couple of years it has really jumped into the spotlight. And dare I say, it’s even become a bit trendy.

There are a few documentaries that have received a lot of positive recognition and are extremely easy to access (thank you Netflix!). This seems to have a lot to do with it. The information is out there and your average Joe is getting their hands on it.

There are restaurants popping up everywhere that are either completely vegan or have vegan options. There are shops, bakeries (yum!), and new foods emerging all of the time. And the number of people going vegan rises daily

The Road to Vegan

My Earliest Influence

So, I grew up in Atlantic Canada in a small city, in the 80’s. Our family was a very meat and potatoes kind of family, along with pretty much everyone else I knew lol. Being Vegetarian was odd and being Vegan was practically unheard of.

Though I did have one aunt who was Vegan when I was a child. This made me aware of what it was in a time where the knowledge really wasn’t out there.

When we went to her house we always ate Vegan food (it was always delicious by the way). Other than the times we ate with her though, veganism was never thought of or talked about.

Out of site, out of mind as they say.

Many many years passed…

Throughout 2016 I began to enjoy meat less and feeling the animal cruelty more and more. Becoming vegetarian began to cross my mind.

Just thoughts though, I never acted on them. I suppose I wasn’t ready. We all must do things in our own time.

Hello Netflix!

Then at the beginning of 2017 we got Netflix (yes finally lol). The binge watching of documentaries began. There were just so many to choose from!

I have always been interested in health, fitness and feeding your body well. Not so surprisingly, the health documentaries peaked my interest.

Due to this I chose the documentaries discussing the benefits of following a plant based diet to watch first. It took about 3 documentaries, the third one being Cowspiracy, to become vegetarian.

The first 2 I watched were, ‘Forks Over Knives’ and ‘What the Health’

Though I was pretty convinced after the first two, Cowspiracy blew my mind. All three of these docs should be on your watch list, if they aren’t already.

The first couple focused mostly on the health detriments of eating animal products. As well as, the horrible animal cruelty that occurs in the industry. Both already valid reasons to ditch the animal products. These docs did such an amazing job at highlighting just how bad these two things were. I was pretty much convinced.

And then came Cowspiracy. The documentary that left no question as to the choice I would make.  It focused on the environmental aspects that are threatened due to animal agriculture and the statistics are staggering. You watch it and can’t believe nobody is talking about this!

However, at this point it is beginning to be discussed more and more each day

The Earth is in Trouble & Needs Us to Care

While the health aspects and respect for all life are reason enough to give up animal products, the third element of the environment really drove it home.

Both my partner and myself gave up meat immediately after watching.  There were no final goodbyes to meat or last meals, we just stopped eating it and that was that.

It did not feel difficult. Making the decision and sticking to it felt easy and better than that, it felt good, empowering even. We were doing something important for the environment, the animals and ourselves.

Though being from the Atlantic provinces I did mourn seafood for a moment because, well, I loved it. Lol. C’est la vie!

Not to mention, my partner and I are both devotees to nature based faiths (witch and druid) the thought of contributing to the deterioration of the environment in this way was not something we could continue doing.

Now that we were aware of the eco consequences, taking part in it  felt completely wrong.

Thus began the, ‘are we going to become vegan’ talks.

Making the Jump

We became vegetarian in February and by June we were on the vegan train. Now while I said becoming vegetarian was easy, becoming vegan was more of a challenge.

Yes because we were saying goodbye to things we loved and ate on a daily basis. Goodbye yogurt and farewell cheese! But, aside from that, there are milk products in everything!

Things where it just doesn’t seem to belong and you are left asking yourself, why!? Why does there have to be modified milk ingredients in 90% of granolas….umm really, it’s oats! Yes I am using exclamation points because that is how it feels when reading the labels on things at the grocery store.

And in most regular restaurants so many items have meat, cheese, or simply milk ingredients in them. So yes, even though I wrote above that it is easier now than ever to become vegan it is still not a walk in the park.

Many adaptations and changes needed to be made to our daily diets and eating habits.

But was it worth it? Absolutely.

Biggest Challenges

Here are a few of the biggest challenges we had making the switch:

Finding a milk replacement for our coffee.

This was a tough one. Firstly, a lot of non-dairy milks are a bit thin and they do not compliment well with coffee, at least in my humble opinion.

Secondly, we have coffee out a lot and many places did not carry non-dairy milks at the time. At least not the tasty ones lol.

This has gotten much better! Places like Starbucks and pretty much every independent cafe tend to carry a couple of options.

However, after trying pretty much every non-dairy milk on the market, well almost, it was oat milk for the win (followed by cashew).

Of course back in 2017 we had to hit up our local natural stores to find them. Not anymore!

Regular grocery stores have full sections now dedicated to plant based milks. This alone shows just how much things have changed in 3 short years.

Breakfast dates can still be tough. Standard breakfast joints almost always only have regular milk and cream. Hello black coffee.

Finding a cheese replacement.

Because well, let’s face it, there is no replacement for cheese. Cheese is delicious and you can’t imitate it, not really.

We have tried quite a few different ones at this point. Cashew cheese is my favourite, though it doesn’t taste like cheese per se, it is tasty in it’s own right. It reminds me of flavoured soft cheeses like cream cheese or Boursin.

There is also the Earth Island brand, which has pretty decent mozzarella and pizza blends. Yes I am aware, they don’t taste exactly like cheese either lol. BUT they do the trick and are especially tasty melted on pizza or in quesadillas.

I will also say here, your taste buds will change, trust me. You will enjoy things more as time passes (including your vegetables!). And I can confidently say that I no longer miss cheese.

Discovering the art of eating out as a vegan.

Eating out can be difficult at regular restaurants. I mean you are not always in the mood for a salad (and even this is hard at some places).

And if you don’t eat fries, like me, you are left with little options. There are definitely some restaurants where literally every item contains animal products except the fries lol.

So you research. You discover where in your area it is easiest to eat vegan, how to order, and what questions to ask.

I definitely had more than one disappointing meal out during this process. There is a learning curve!

Happy Discoveries

Our local Thai place allows us to make our pad thai orders vegan very easily.

Panago one of our local pizza places offers pretty delicious vegan pizzas, yay!

We are lucky to live in Toronto where there are lots of vegan friendly places around the city. We basically only hit those ones up the these days.

The transition also had us actually cooking more at home, which is pretty great.

Silliest Mistakes

The road to veganism is paved with good intentions. Lol. We have made some surprising, and rather silly, mistakes thus far on our journey.

I thought it might be fun to share a couple of them with you. Nobody gets it right all of the time in the beginning.

  • Ordering a ‘vegan’ pizza with pesto as the sauce. Ummm yeah, pesto almost always has parmesan cheese in it. We realized after we got home and thought about it.
  • Ordering a Pumpkin Spice Latte from Starbucks with soy milk, no whip and assuming that the pumpkin spice syrup did not contain milk ingredients. Ah no, never assume these things. I realized, again after I was drinking it, that it likely did have milk ingredients. And boy did I savour that latte. Bye bye pumpkin spice (at least from Starbucks).
  • Assuming our granolas were vegan. Apparently most oats need milk ingredients to make them edible. Please note the sarcasm. Now though, we have found some delicious vegan granolas. *happy dance*
  • Ordering Pad Thai with no meat or egg completely ignoring what might be in the sauce since it clearly is not milk based. Of course it makes perfect sense that what it does have is fish and oyster sauce lol. Live and learn!

These are the ones I can remember right now, but trust me there have been more! 😛

The Pay Offs

Nothing tastes as good as vegan feels. This is a statement I now wholeheartedly believe.

Our bodies felt great and we both ended up losing weight. Not to mention during every meal we are very aware of what we are not contributing to. THAT is the big one.

We are not killing innocent animals unnecessarily and we are not adding to the environmental issues that animal agriculture seriously contributes to. That alone makes you feel pretty damn good about your choices.

Then there are all of the health benefits. It’s not like dieting where you feel you are restricting yourself. We don’t feel restricted and we are not hungry all of the time.

Guys, there are SO many foods out there that do not come from animals, like most of them! The options are endless.

And no, we are not worried about calcium or protein intake. People like to assume those are concerns. There are many many plant-based foods that provide those things. Posts on these to come.

We have also discovered plenty of vegan junk food along the way to satisfy cravings, so no worries there 😉

Being Kind is Cool.

Now I ask you to please keep in mind these are simply my choices, views, opinions and some insights into my own personal journey. You in no way need to agree with me or think I now look down on people who eat animal products, I don’t.

Eating meat and dairy is what we are used to as a society, it is still very much the norm and that is fine and expected. I say this because discussions around veganism are so often filled with hostility from both sides. The things you read online are appalling.

Why do so many people get so up in arms about what some people are choosing to eat or not eat is a mystery to me. Eat what you want, what you think is healthy, and what makes you happy. No need to bring out the boxing gloves lol.

At this point, however, I do strongly advocate a vegan diet.

Though I will not preach it to all who cross my path. I don’t like preachy people in general about anything. So if we have dinner together and you decide to get a giant juicy steak please enjoy, you won’t hear a peep out of me.

I will say though, if you are an environmentalist, advocate for animals, or follow a nature based spiritual path, being vegan seems the obvious choice.

Talk to me!

Okay, that is all for me! Are you newly vegan or just thinking about making the change? Have you been vegan for years and have some tips to share?

I want to hear from you! Please feel free to drop me a line on here or any of my social media accounts.

Lammas: Bread, Beer & Giving Thanks

Lammas (Lughnasadh) is upon us once again. Are you excited? Perhaps you are making ready your festivities for the day?

If you need some tips and ideas for just how to harness this bountiful Sabbat energy you are in the right place!

Another Sabbat, and another time to be joyous and grateful for all that nature and the universe provides for us.

And yes, I know, summer seems to be just flying by! But August is a beautiful, vibrant month and we shall welcome it with open arms, Lammas blessings, and perhaps a ritual or two 😉

What is Lammas?

Lammas, also known as Lughnasadh, falls on August 1st. It is the celebration and welcoming of the first grain harvest.

At this time we give thanks and honour mother earth for bringing forth to us what we have asked and worked for since the Summer Solstice.

The first harvest of the year has ripened and is ready. This means of course, time for the first harvest festival of the year. And who doesn’t love a good harvest festival? I know I do! 😀

This day is even more significant as it is also the midpoint of the warm time of year. The midpoint between Beltane and Samhain.

Lammas: A Little History

As mentioned, Lammas is traditionally the celebration of the first Grain Harvest. But also to honour the Celtic Sun God, Lugh.  Lugh is the god from which Lughnasadh comes.

Depending on your own spiritual path you may choose to celebrate one or the other, or both!

The word, Lammas, comes from the old English phrase, hlaf-maesse, which translates to, loaf mass.

August 1st was the day that the first sheaves of grain were cut. Grain was of high importance in many a civilization for, well, millennia lol. The grain crops were absolutely crucial to our ancestors survival. By us celebrating Lammas, we are, in turn, also honouring them and their legacies.

The Celtic God, Lugh, was known as the god of many skills.  He is also often known as the patron of bards and musicians. He was honoured and celebrated by various societies in the British Isles and Europe throughout history.

This time of year has long been a traditional time for festivals, craft markets and faires. (Some of my favourites things!) Lugh may have something to do with this, him being of many skills, the arts included. 🙂

Ways to Celebrate

There are many wonderful  ways to ring in the day. In your own special way of course. Here are a few ideas you may like to try. 🙂

Recommit to Mother Earth

The land is at the forefront of this celebration. Remember her, thank her, and treat her well.

Reflect on the footprint you are leaving and think what steps might you can take to make it just a little lighter.

Recycle, compost, drive less, eat less animal products…there is always something we can do to make our path here a little quieter.

Craft a Doll of Corn

Yes a corn doll! Use wheat, barley or cornstalks to create a doll to represent the harvest and add it to your altar.

If you are not so crafty in this way, like me lol, there so many tutorials out there. Check out Pinterest!

And it would definitely be a fun activity to do with the kiddies as well!

Build your Lammas Altar

As always you can transform your altar or set up a dedicated one to this day.

Fill it with some of those symbols I mentioned above and your corn doll of course. Make it beautiful, meaningful, and personal.

Perform some Lammas Magick

August is a magickal time full of possibility, hope and abundance.

Nature is thriving and we are surrounded by living colour. This makes it a wonderful time to perform some home & hearth magick. Consider performing a cleansing or protection spell to freshen up your humble abode.

Take up a New Skill

As Lugh is the god of many skills (and I just have to think of Xena whenever I type that lol), take this moment to develop a new one.

Has there been something you have been wanting to learn but haven’t done it just yet? Well go for it! There is seriously no time like the present.

Bake some bread

Grab an apron Martha! Baking bread is a great way to connect with those grains that are so important.

Perhaps a traditional Lammas bread or bisquit recipe you find on Pinterest would do the trick (and yes I love Pinterest lol).

If you aren’t on there yet, hope to it! And you can follow THE WHOLESOME WITCH for some more witchy wellness and magick ideas!

Eat, Drink & be Merry

What Sabbat would be complete without a feast, really? And this time of year the garden is rife with all kinds of delightful veggies and herbs to be enjoyed.

Take advantage of this! Invite over some of your most special humans, bake that Lammas bread, fire up the BBQ and crack open a beer.

Time to give thanks and party the way Lugh intended!

Final Thoughts.

Remember to be eternally grateful for what you have and all of your many blessings and luxuries our modern day life allows us. It is a lot easier for us to get a loaf of bread than it was our ancestors.

Take nothing for granted, celebrate the arts, thank mother earth for her many gifts, bathe in the warmth of the sun, eat the bread, drink the beer and don’t forget to smile.

Your turn!

What does Lammas mean to you? Do you have any favourite traditions or will this be your first time celebrating?

I always love to know your thoughts, so please leave a comment or drop me a line. There are tons of ways for us to connect 🙂

Toxins to Toss: What’s that on your face?

Toxins, toxins! Read all about it! So, the term ‘natural beauty’ is a hot topic in recent years and this may leave you with questions.

What is natural beauty? Or, are toxins even a real thing? Yes!

Toxins, in a simple definition, are any poisonous substances produced by bacteria, plants, or animals.

Toxins are very real and they surround us on a daily basis. They are in the food we eat, the air we breathe, and the things we put on our skin, to name just a few sources.

Our bodies are smart and equipped with a natural detox system. But toxins accumulate and are stored in our bodies. There can easily  be too many for the body to keep up with and detox efficiently.

This is when unpleasant symptoms and illnesses arise. Your body is telling you its toxic load has been reached. It’s crying for help!

Some of these toxins are easier to avoid than others. So why not take steps to do so when you can?

A natural beauty routine does just that. We are trying to create a beauty routine that is more natural and less harmful to our bodies.

The Quest for a Natural Beauty Routine

Back in 2012 I started wondering what exactly was in my beauty products. Things I used each and every day.

Can I tell you the exact moment I started to think more about toxins and their dangers? Nope, lol. But it’s kind of just like a lightbulb went off.

And so it began…label reading. Or rather trying to read them. I could not actually pronounce so many items listed.

Reading labels is a bit like being Alice falling down the rabbit hole.

You begin obsessively reading everything. Then you start to really think about it. How on earth can these substances be allowed in our products? You have no idea what they are and you can’t even pronounce them.

Oh that’s right, corporate greed. Let’s make things last as long as possible, for as cheap as possible, and sell it at a ridiculous mark-up.

Anywho, knowledge leads to action. Before you know it you are abandoning all of your tried and true beauty favourites.

Getting rid of some of your most coveted items may be hard in the beginning. But you will find natural brands that you love just as much, or even more! I speak from experience here. I have found many natural brands that I could not live without now.

You will end up being so grateful you started this journey and only left wondering why you didn’t do it sooner.

DIY is Always a Stellar Way to Natural Beauty!

I took this moment of enlightenment to begin doing something I had wanted to do for years. Really, years, about 15 of them lol.

This finally lit a fire under me to begin making my own beauty products. And you can do this too!

Flashback to 14 year old me watching Practical Magic and seeing Sandra Bullock’s delightful little shop filled with her magickal creations. I so wanted to have that!

Alas, life happens. Fast forward to 15 years later, I finally started created stuff. Better late than never is an incredibly true statement.

And there are so many DIY recipes out there for all of your beauty needs. And they mostly don’t require any crazy ingredients. Better still, you will know every single thing that goes into them. And toxins won’t be on the list.

You could start by trying out my LAVENDER CITRUS TONER RECIPE I have put up here on the blog. It is super simple and effective!

Toxins to Toss: Let’s Go!

Needless to say, I became shocked and appalled with the beauty industry in general.

Some of the ingredients I was researching were linked to cancer, reproductive issues, allergies, skin conditions and environmental issues to name just a few.

So here I have compiled a list of 7 of the top toxins to avoid whenever you can.

I have to say this post took me a bit longer to write than most. I wanted to get the info out there so you knew what you were buying. But also not have it read like something out of a scientific journal, because boring. Lol.

Hopefully I got the job done! Let’s begin!

1. Parabens

Found inlotions, creams, make-up, hair care products, deodorants

ConcernsLinked to breast cancer, premature aging and male reproductive functions.

Parabens are very commonly used in cosmetic products as a preservative (preventing bacteria growth and allowing them to last way longer than they should).

Since they have developed quite a bad rap in recent years it is getting much easier to find products without them.

However, unless it is labelled Paraben Free on the packaging there is a good chance the product contains them.

Names to watch out for include: methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, and ethylparaben.

2. Phthalates

Found innail polish, liquid body wash, hair care products, fragranced moisturizers

ConcernsLinked to birth defects, hormone disruption, breast cancer, reproductive issues.

Phthalates are generally used in products to make them softer and are in almost all synthetic fragrances to make the scents more potent.

Due to the fact that they are used in so many products from our cosmetics, to many types of plastics, to our food, we should avoid them wherever and whenever possible.

It is hard to know they are in products sometimes because they are often not listed on the ingredient list. Such as when a product lists ‘fragrance’ as an ingredient, it likely contains phthalates. But they are not obligated to actually say it. Nice, huh?

Best to be safe and choose products that clearly state Phthalate Free on the packaging.

3. Fragrance/Parfum

Found inalmost all beauty and body products including lotions, creams, hair products, body washes, deodorants, perfumes and the list goes on

ConcernsLinked to reproductive issues, cancers, allergies, migraines and skin sensitivities.

So fragrance is rather annoying because of what I mentioned above. They are not obligated to tell you exactly what is in it *cough harmful chemicals*.

In my opinion, fragrance in products is incredibly unnecessary anyways. And often synthetic fragrances smell like just that, synthetic (I am now scrunching my nose up because I can’t help it.)

Ahhh, the fresh smell of fake fragrance in the morning!

Umm no, nobody says that. But that is what you are smelling when you douse yourself in your favourite, and likely over-priced perfume, every morning. A lovely concoction of harmful chemicals.

Buy products that are scented with essential oils instead. They smell so much nicer anyways!

4. Coal Tar Dyes & Synthetic Colouring

Found inhair dyes, lipsticks, eyshadows

ConcernsLinked to cancers, birth defects, organ damage, nerve cell damage, skin irritation.

These dyes are labeled FD&C, D&C, (followed by a colour and a number), or CI’s followed by a number.

Coal Tar is a mixing pot of chemicals that originate from petroleum. Very prevalent in hair dyes with the darker shades having a more concentrated amount than the lighter ones.

If you love dying your hair (trust me I feel you!) you can always try using henna or one of the more natural brands on the market today.

Google is your friend here! Do some research and see what methods might suit your needs best.

Also best to go for more natural mineral make-up blends as opposed to the run of the mill drug store brands. They are full of synthetic colourings.

5. Sulfates (SLS & SLES)

Found inshampoos, body washes & cleansers

ConcernsOften contaminated with ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane. Both have been linked to cancer as well as skin and respiratory issues.

SLS & SLES are often used in soaps and shampoos to create that soapy lather that occurs. Basically it makes things nice and foamy.

While this is a nice effect, it’s not a good enough reason to add chemicals to products if you ask me. We do not need our soap to lather up in a luxurious way to make us clean.

I actually once read, when I was a teenager, that the more a soap lathers the less effective it is. Lol. I have no idea if that is true! But the tidbit stuck with me 😛

Unfortunately, there are, I believe, over 150 different ways that Sulfates can be listed on your product. This makes it super hard to avoid.

Like some of the other ingredients on here you can find more products now a days that are labelled SLS Free. Choose those ones!

Of course if you begin to buy natural brands, you should feel confident that sulfates, or any of the other no-no ingredients, will not be in there.

6. Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT)

Found inlotions, creams, lipstick, make-up, deodorant, hair products

ConcernsLinked to reproductive issues, hormone interference, organ toxicity and cancer.

BHA & BHT are also widely used as a cosmetic preservative. Do yourself a favour and skip it.

Side note, these little gems are also used as preservatives in our food (mmmm, yummy!).

Sidebar: You can SUBSCRIBE and receive my complete Wholesome Kitchen Clean-up Guide. I talk a lot more about preservatives in food there.

7. Triclosan and Triclocarban

Found in –  products labeled anti-bacterial or antimicrobial

ConcernsLinked to hormone imbalance and contributing to anti-biotic resistance in bacteria (a major health concern).

These are used as antibacterial agents. Our bodies protect us from germs. Exposure to germs is what builds our immune systems.

There is no reason to use any anti-bacterial products (die bacteria die!). Especially when they most definitely do more harm than good. The reason being, anti-bacterial products kill both the good and the bad bacteria.

And, some bad bacteria will endure the affects of these chemicals, in turn, coming back stronger creating super bacteria. Super Bacteria? Super no thank you.

Steps to Take

Not very nice right?

Are you feeling ready to get that natural beauty routine underway?

It gets easier all the time to go a more natural route. There are some stellar brands that have ingredients you can actually pronounce, humane practices, as well as vegan and organic options.

Or, of course, you can always start making your own! I will be doing more posts on that topic in the coming months.

Shop Local & Start Small

Whatever neck of the woods you may live in I am sure there are also some local handmade brands that would love your support.

Shop the craft and farmer’s markets around your area. You are sure to find some magnificent toxin-free gems just waiting to be discovered.

Now, know that you can start small, change things out as you finish them (beauty products are expensive!). You don’t need to just toss everything out in one fell swoop.

Shop around, find brands you would like to try out and go from there. And we all have that most favourite product that we do not want to get rid of. Work yourself up to that one and get rid of it last. You can do it!

Buyer Beware

Just a quick side note, as this could have a whole post all on it’s own (putting it on the list! Lol).

Just because a product touts being ‘natural’, ‘clean’, or ‘green’ on the label does not necessarily make it safer for you.

Companies have gotten very creative with their labelling and using buzzwords to have consumers think the product is not filled with harmful ingredients.

Unfortunately, these ‘natural’ terms are not well regulated and easily manipulated.

Example: The product says ‘made with all natural shea butter’. While that may be true , what else is in there with that all natural shea butter?

So I digress, even if the product says ‘natural’, read the label, and do your research if necessary.

Environmental Working Group – Your New BFF

The Environmental Working Group website is amazeballs. Familiarize yourself with it!

EWG’s Skin-deep Database is a gold mine of information regarding all things toxic.

You can put any ingredient as well as specific products into the search and it will give you a toxin reading of 1-10 (try and stick to ingredients with the lowest ratings obvs).

I love this site! So useful! And an invaluable resource throughout your quest for a  natural beauty routine.

Litha Celebrations: Light, Life, & Mother Earth

There is nothing more soothing than those warm summer rays hitting your face, am I right? Alas, the time has come where the sun is beaming bright and daylight lasts until 9pm!

Yes friend, Litha (summer solstice) is right around the corner. The blessings of nature are surrounding us with deliciously fresh fruits and veggies, beautiful blooms, wonderfully long days, fresh breezes and warm summer rain.

But, you may be thinking, what does Litha mean, how is it celebrated, and what exactly do you do on the summer solstice?

I’ve got you! Read on to discover all of that and more.

What is Litha?

Litha takes place on the Summer Solstice and happens between June 20 and 23rd, in the Northern Hemisphere that is. In the Southern Hemisphere Litha is celebrated between December 20th and 23rd, our Yule. This year the solstice falls on June 20th. The first official day of summer and the time of year that is filled with life and light.

The Summer Solstice is the longest day of the year and truly anticipated with the promise of warm days ahead.

Nature is at it’s peak with all of mother earth invigoratingly bright and in full bloom. A celebration of the Sun at her full strength and also the moment when the earth will once again begin to descend itself back into darkness (something we need not think about just yet lol).

Litha: A Little History

Litha is a celebration of the sun star and mother nature. We honour the Sun as well as the Green Man and Lady. Nature is once again at her fullest and all is swelled with abundance.

Traditionally on the eve of Litha there were bonfires lit a top of hills and in sacred spaces in order to honour the sun at her most powerful. The wood for the fires was often oak (representing the Oak King who rules the waxing portion of the year). Herbs were thrown into the fire and then used to bless the animals. Next the coal was scattered into the fields to encourage a bountiful harvest.

Citizens would stay up all night on Midsummers Eve burning the fires and finally would welcome the solstice sunrise in the morning.

Faeries You Say

This is also prime time for the fey folk to emerge from their dwellings.

There are old stories that the fey would ride their magickal horses across the countryside in a parade like fashion on the solstice.

You may want to decorate your space with flowers, glitter (biodegradable of course), natural elements, play music, eat, drink and be merry to create a warm and inviting atmosphere for our faery friends. However, remember to take care as the fey are known for being tricksy little creatures. 😉

Symbols of Litha

Now, as with all Sabbats there are certain items attached to Litha to super charge the festivities

Here you will find some elements and ideas to help you make the most of your very own magickal summer solstice celebration. Nevertheless, it may be as extravagant or low key as you wish.

Ways to Celebrate

There are so many ways that you can honour this special day, the sun and beautifully green mother nature.

Ultimately, how you choose to do this is entirely up to you. It need not be extra (unless you want it to be!). It may be as grand or modest as you see fit.

Above all, remember to soak up the sun and embrace the wonders that surround us each and every day.

Perform a Sunrise Blessing or Ritual

This is the time when the sun is at her most powerful, honour and thank her for her warmth and light. Awake with her and drink her in the whole day through.

Make Some Litha Crafts

Make a wreath or crown made from fresh flowers and greenery you’ve collected from outside. Perfect for if you have little ones.

Now I won’t pretend here, I am not super crafty so cannot provide you with a fabulous tutorial, BUT for lots of fantastic ideas on how to do this check out Pinterest! Like this one HERE.

Embrace Pinterest guys, it is seriously your friend. And follow me while you’re at it HERE 😉

Build Your Litha Altar

Transform your altar or set up a dedicated one to Litha. Fill it with some of those symbols I mentioned above. Make it beautiful and make it yours.

Play Music & Dance

Whether all alone or surrounded by your best, most awesome people (likely just those you live with this year, but hopefully they are your best people anyways!).

Music and dance is a perfect way to welcome the faeries. Besides, what festive occasion is complete without these key elements anyways?

Set Out an Offering

Speaking of faeries, set an offering out for the fey folk. Preferably something sweet, it is said that they have a particular liking for honey.

Host a Bonfire or BBQ

Bring together your loved ones and host a bonfire (if you are in an area that enables you to do this), or a summer kick off BBQ will do nicely as well 😉

Eat, drink and be merry! Of course, given the circumstances you can do these things with your housemates or settle for a Zoom event this year!

Fully Embrace Summer and be Outside!

Nature is thriving and at her most bountiful this time of year. The sun is strong and those daylight hours are long on the Summer Solstice.

Take advantage of them! Whether you are spending the time in your own backyard, at a park, or in the forest; drink in the freshness, the trees, the grass and the delightful summer days that are to follow.

Refresh and Re-energize

Heading into the summer months it is an optimal time to take stock of your life.

Be honest with yourself and see how your goals have been coming along. Consider if you are feeling fulfilled or if you need to change things up a bit.

With this in mind it’s a perfect time for starting new projects and getting things done.

Summer is an invigorating time so take advantage of that extra energy and motivation that the season provides.

Summering up… (see what I did there lol)

Awake with the sun, dance around your living room, do some Litha crafts with the kiddies, or perform an outdoor ritual.

Whatever you decide, feel the life surrounding you, feel the joy in your heart, feel the warmth of the sun and look forward to the exciting adventures the summer months will surely hold. (yes they can still be adventure filled even if we are social distancing, be creative!)

Well, what are you waiting for? Time to start planning your day!

I want to hear from you!

What does Litha mean to you? Do you have any favourite traditions or will this be your first time celebrating?

Candle Magick: A Practical Beginner’s Guide

Candles are a magickal thing. But what exactly is candle magick? You may not even be a practitioner of magick but the gentle act of lighting a candle has a calming effect that leaves a soft smile on your lips.

‘Light a candle, say a prayer’ is pretty standard spiritual practice and not unfamiliar territory. Candles have long been used by those who choose magick and the natural elements as their spiritual path.

Candle magick can be simple or complex. This is up to you and can’t be ‘wrong’.

So if you have been curious about it, but not really sure where to start, keep on reading! I’ll be sharing specific steps to follow, as well as colour, oil and herb associations to get you going 🙂

Candle Magick: A little history

Fire is a known powerful element. So it’s only natural that candles would make their way into spiritual work. Candles have been used in spiritual practice since ancient times and are still used today. And not only by those who practice the magick but by many religions.

Candles are used by Hindus, Buddhists, Pagans, and Christians to name a few. They are often an integral part of their practice. So why not make it a part of your own spiritual work arsenal 😉

Candle Magick: Putting it into practice

Choose your candle

I have listed the colours and associations below. Pick a candle that is plain and without any extras or adornments in the appropriate colour.

Set Your Intention

You want to do this before scribing or dressing your candle. That way you have it in the forefront of your thoughts throughout the entire process.

Scribe Your Candle

You may use your ritual knife or a pin to carve names, numbers, symbols or key words associated to your goal into your candle.

What you inscribe is totally up to you so be creative!

Dress Your Candle

Anoint in your chosen oils and/or herbs (please see notes below on properly blending your oils). Oil first, then herbs so that the herbs will have something to stick to.

Put a few drops of oil on your index finger, trace around, up to down, and anything you have scribed. There are theories on which is the correct way to rub the oil but I say go with what feels right to you for that particular purpose.

After you rub the oil on, roll the candle in your herbs. You can also sprinkle a bit on the very top around the wick if you choose.

Say Your Spell or Blessing aloud

Be strong, say it with intention and focus.

Light Your Candle

You don’t want to forget this step. 😉

Focus Your Intention

Breathe deep, meditate with your thoughts, visualize your desired outcome. Try and embrace the feelings that would occur if your goal were to be reached.

Recite affirmations related to what you wish to manifest in your head while you visualize.

Maintain the process until you feel fulfilled and content.

Allow Candle to Burn out on it’s own

If possible and safe of course. Obviously don’t go to sleep or leave the house with your candle burning. Safety first!

If you can’t let it burn all the way, just let it be as long as you are able to.

Notes on Oil Blending

Blend your essential oil (or oils) into a base carrier oil. Fractionated Coconut Oil, Jojoba or Sweet Almond Oil are good choices.

This is useful for a couple of reasons, the oil will be thicker with a carrier oil so better for securing your herbs once you roll the candle in them.

Also, with a base oil you can use this ritual oil to anoint your person, if desired, and not worry about any skin irritations. As a general rule essential oils should not be put directly onto the skin.

Not to mention, essential oils can be pricey and diluting them with a carrier oil will make them last much longer!

Using a 30ml glass amber dropper bottle to store them works well. Add desired amount of essential oils (10-20 drops is a nice amount), then fill remainder of the bottle with your base oil. Give it a shake and you are good to go!

Herb Correspondence

Ashprotection, health, prosperity, luck

Basilprotection, love, courage, wealth

Nutmegfertility, luck, prosperity, breaking hexes

Thistlestrengthens energy, healing, protection

Vervainincrease wealth & love, repels psychic negativity, purification, peace

Herb Prep Notes

The herbs should be ground finely. They will adhere to the candle more easily and are less likely to have little bits catching fire as it burns.

Be sure you burn the candle in a fireproof container large enough to catch any bits that may fall off in the process. A cast iron cauldron is great for this if you happen to have one.

Final thoughts on Candle Magick

There are many more oils and herbs that you can use here of course.  Do your research and experiment. These list is just to get you started.

And keep in mind, the most important thing here is your intention. Even if all you do is choose your candle, light the wick and meditate with your desired goal, your energy and focus are where the power lies.

Scribing and dressing the candle is by no means obligatory, but you may feel it enhances the power of the spell.

Ideally, I like to do these things. We all would, but life happens! If you don’t have quite the appropriate herbs or oils for your purpose (or on some days, the time) don’t sweat it. And don’t scrap your ritual intent all together!

The act of lighting a candle and focusing on your desires can be a very powerful thing so don’t dismiss simplicity.

Your turn!

Natural Cleaning Guide for the Undomestic Goddess

There is nothing quite like sitting back with a glass of wine in your freshly cleaned dwelling. Am I right? So let’s talk natural cleaning for a minute, shall we?

Cleaning for a lot of us is simply a necessary evil of adulting. Domestic goddess I am not lol.

I hate cleaning. However, there is nothing quite like the satisfaction that comes when everything is sparkly clean and fresh.

Now, what if you could make that happen without nasty chemical filled cleaning products? I am here to tell you, you absolutely can.

If the thought of natural cleaning solutions for the home intrigues you, keep on reading!

The Undomestic Goddess

So one day I would love to be a downright Martha Stewart (minus the jail time…). Alas, this is not that day. Many of you can likely relate! We get by and that’s about it lol.

I am not overly domestic or  a natural DIY’er so when I say the info and recipes included here are simple, I ain’t lying lol.

Trust me, if I can mix up some natural cleaning solutions that will make my counters sparkle, so can you!

A clean home is incredibly beneficial to our psyche and promotes calmness. And knowing you are creating a less toxic, more eco-friendly space only enhances those feelings.

Let’s all claim the title of Green Goddess and leave domestic in the dust.

Cleaning Without Commercial Products?

You may be thinking, impossible! Don’t you need those heavy duty commercial products to really kill germs?

In short, no you don’t, but they love you to think that.

Commercial cleaning products are filled with some of the most gnarly chemical ingredients (ie. ammonia, 2-butoxyethanol, triclosan, etc.). These are items you should really not be breathing in or getting on your skin.

Furthermore, they are just simply not necessary.

It’s time of you to create your very own natural cleaning product arsenal with a few simple ingredients. There is also a pretty good chance you already have a few of these items in your kitchen.

Did I mention yet what a money saver this is? Well, it sure is! So, grab your cup of coffee (or glass of wine whatevs) and let’s get into it, shall we? 🙂

Natural Cleaning Recipes (to get you started!)

Instructions: Simply mix all ingredients in a spray bottle, give it a shake and you are good to go.

All Purpose Cleaner

1/2 c. white vinegar, 1 c. water, 10 drops lemongrass EO, 10 drops lavender EO

Disinfectant Spray

2 c. water, 10 drops lemongrass, 10 drops lavender, 15 drops tea tree, 5 drops peppermint

Glass Cleaner

1 c. vinegar, 1 c. distilled water, 10 drops lemongrass EO

Mold Remover

1 c. water, 1/3 c. rubbing alcohol, 10 drops tea tree EO

Shower Spray

1 c. water, 1/3 c. rubbing alcohol, 10 drops peppermint EO

Furniture Cleaner

1/2 c. coconut oil, 1/3 c. lemon juice

Mix ingredients together and use a soft cloth to rub into furniture. It is a good idea to dust first, but the lemon makes it not completely necessary. A spot test is also a good idea to be safe.

Carpet Deodorizer

2 c. baking soda, 20-30 drops of lavender, lemongrass or peppermint, your choice

For this recipe mix together, let sit for a few minutes and apply to carpet prior to vacuuming.

Natural Cleaning Ideas Have You Excited yet?

You have never been quite so excited to go on a cleaning spree, am I right? I thought so.

Now, take a trip to the store (if needed), then put on your favourite tunes, grab your spray bottles, load up your diffuser with a little lavender (because why not) and get to it!

Now, you don’t have to make all of the recipes here. Though feel free to go nuts.

A less overwhelming start may be to make a batch of the all purpose cleaner. Spray all of the things, see how you like it, and go from there.

You’ll feel so accomplished knowing you made all of these natural cleaning solutions completely on your own. Not to mention, they are non-toxic, more eco-friendly, and likely saved you a few pretty pennies. Icing on the cake!

Outcome? Your home will smell great, feel fresh, and with no extra chemicals floating around  in the air. Extra bonus, I do believe you will be in the best after cleaning mood ever.

And you may just feel a little closer to that domestic goddess status 😉

Beltane Celebration: Fires, Faeries, & Love

Maybe you have heard of Beltane, or May Day, but don’t really know what it all means. Or perhaps you know all about it but need a little inspiration to help plan out your festivities this year.

You are in the right place!

May is an absolutely magickal and electric month. The air is getting warmer and nature is springing vibrantly to life all around us. It is only appropriate to begin the month with the wonderfully joyous, Beltane.

So, What exactly is Beltane?

Beltane, or May Day as it is also known, is celebrated on May 1st. A long standing Celtic holiday, connected with the beginning of summer and one of the greatest most celebrated of the Sabbats, along with Samhain.

It is the mid-point between the Spring Equinox and the Summer Solistice. The time when Spring has reached it’s peak and Summer is just beginning to show it’s pretty, luxurious feathers. Many cultures have traditional Spring festivals also on May 1st.

A glorious time to honour life, it’s pleasures, and the abundance that is promised in the coming months of summer.

Beltane History

The history and customs associated with Beltane are rich. With celebrations focused on life, fertility, abundance, sexuality and the sacred joining of the God & Goddess.

The word Beltane originates from Gaelic and roughly translated means ‘bright fire’. Certain translations also link it to ‘mouth of fire’. Some also believe that it was named after the Celtic Sun God, Belanus or ‘Bel, the bright one’, but this is debated.

Fires would burn throughout the night of Beltane along with much dancing, drinking, feasting and overall merriment.

The Beltane Fires

The Beltane fires were a fundamental part of the festivities. The fires were lit to cleanse, purify, and celebrate the life and fertility that the spring time brings forth.

Cattle were walked around or between the fires as a cleansing and for protection to gain immunity against disease. Individuals took part by dancing, walking around, and sometimes jumping over the fires to symbolize leaving the past behind and starting fresh new beginnings.

Ways to Celebrate

As far as celebrations go, and I mentioned earlier, this is a big one.

Do it up in a grand way, whatever kind of way is big and meaningful to you. Be free, be joyous and be self indulgent 😉

Perform a Purifying Fire Ritual

This can simply be a candle placed in a key location of your home. Dance around the candle and/or jump over it (all very carefully of course!) to purify, cleanse and free yourself from the past. Use a green candle to represent the cleansing flame.

Or if you are lucky enough to have a fire pit in your yard, take full advantage of it!

Make a Beltane Headress

Make a wreath of flowers or green leaves to represent the Goddess and God of Beltane. Add some ribbons while you are at it!

Grab some ideas on how to do this HERE! Gotta love Canadian Living.

Wear it during your Beltane activities.

Decorate with Coloured Ribbons

Tie ribbons to your trees (or plants!) with a blessing written on each one.

This symbolizes the great Hawthorne tree that is associated with Beltane and Faerie magick. Traditionally the people would do this and ask for a wish from the faeries (along with leaving a gift! See next item).

Leave Gifts for the Faeries

Leave a gift or treat for the faeries in your garden or by one of your plants (one decorated for Beltane with coloured ribbons!). Make a wish and it is said that the faeries will grant it. Come back and leave a second gift as a thank you once your wish comes to pass.

Build your Beltane Altar

Set up your special spiritual space and dedicate it’s theme to Beltane.

Use some of the crystals, herbs and colours I mentioned above. Have your ribbon decorated plant there as well (if you decided to have one).

Connect with Family/Friends

This is known as a time to spend with your loved ones before everyone becomes busy bodies over the summer months. Do this. Even if just sharing a glass of wine and a phone call. It will feel good and right to connect.

Cleanse your Space

A good smudging is extra appropriate at times of the year that are meant for purification and new beginnings. Cleanse away! If you can include some of the traditional Beltane herbs in your smudge stick, even better 🙂

Honour Loved ones no longer with you

Beltane is another time of year where the veil between worlds is said to be thinned (as with Samhain). Drink a Beltane tea or get a special wine, take a moment of silence and raise your glass to them.

Be in Nature

Nature is all around us and is honoured during Beltane. Acknowledge her beauty and all that she gives us. Walk in the forest (or the park!), or even just down the treelined streets of your neighbourhood, sit outside and meditate or work in your garden.

There are many ways wherever you may be. You need not live in the woods to connect with her, she surrounds us.

Honour Your Body

This is a celebration of life and it’s pleasures. Your body is fundamental in experiencing these things. Without it, your soul and spirit would simply wander.

Show yourself some love, thank your body and all that it does for you, in all of it’s uniqueness and beauty.

You and your body are one, are special, and are magickal. Celebrate your self confidence, and gear up to put your best foot forward, to bring that fierce, creative force that is you to the forefront for all to see. Let the air and energy of the season be your friend, your drive, embrace it to achieve all that you desire.

Moral of the Story

Be merry, be joyous, indulge and celebrate!

Whether you are having a huge gathering with friends and loved ones or kicking it solo (this year it will likely be mostly solo or you could have a zoom party!), make the celebration special and make it yours. Have a feast and dance around a glorious bonfire under the moonlight. Or simply sit back with a couple of candles, burn some Bergamont incense and have a glass (or bottle, because why not) of a good Riesling.

However you decide to ring in the day, do it with good intentions, feel free, and look forward to the wondrous adventures that the coming months shall surely offer.
