5 Witchy Hobbies to Start this Spring

Spring is when the earth wakes up, which makes it the perfect time to nurture your inner green witch and start learning about herbalism! Plants and flowers are full of magical and medicinal properties, and working with them can help you strengthen your connection to nature, nourish your spiritual practice, help you live more sustainably, and also support your overall health and wellness. There are so many wonderful benefits for diving in on this one. Here are some ideas for areas you can study or start with:

  • Grow your own witchy garden with herbs like rosemary, lavender, or mint.
  • Learn how to dry herbs for spells, teas, and incense
  • Learn about the wild plants and flowers in your area
  • Explore ways to use plants to support physical and emotional well-being
  • Learn about herbal remedies for common ailments
  • Studying traditional healing systems like Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and Western herbalism
  • Learning about different correspondences (e.g., lavender for peace, rosemary for protection)
  • Understanding the mind-body-spirit connection in herbal healing
  • Exploring chakra balancing with herbs

And so much more! Learning herbalism  is an incredibly valuable skill that will serve you well throughout your entire life moving forward. We live in an age where we can truly learn anything at the click of a button and learning herbalism is no different.

You can read books on herbalism, plant magic, or green witchcraft, you could sign up for courses or workshops, seek out YouTube videos, or listen to podcasts. Try to start with a few herbs to focus on or dedicate to one area first, or commit to reading one book or doing one course. There is so much to learn it can be a little overwhelming without a clear starting point.

I love diving into divination practices! If you’ve been feeling called to dive deeper into divination practices as well this will be a wonderful area to learn about and practice this spring.

There are so many different types of divination out there, I would recommend choosing the one that you feel called to the most and starting with that. If you try to learn multiple at the same time you will likely not end up really connecting and developing your skills as much as you would if you have a focus. I would say, once you feel comfortable with one then maybe begin to dabble in some others.

If you aren’t sure just yet which one calls to you, do some research and reading on the different types to start with. Once you know a little bit more, one is bound to call out to you a little louder than the others.

Here are some divination practices to explore:

  • Tarot or Oracle Card Reading
  • Reading Tea Leaves or Coffee Grounds (Tasseography)
  • Crystal Ball Reading (Crystallomancy)
  • Scrying Methods (Mirror, Water, Smoke, Fire)
  • Runecasting
  • Ogham Staves
  • Pendulum Divination (Dowsing/Radiesthesia
  • Astrology
  • Numerology
  • Dream Interpretation
  • Palm Reading

There are so many wonderful areas to explore.  Each practice has its own energy and method, so it’s all about finding what resonates with you.

To learn more about divination practices you can read books or blogs, watch YouTube videos, join spiritual communities, follow divination accounts on your socials, or take a course or workshop. You may also seek out a mentor to help teach you.

Learning divination practice will help you connect with your intuition, be more in tune and open to guidance  from the universe, gain clarity on your life’s path, and really strengthen your overall spiritual practice and ritual work.

Both of these things can really deepen your connection to your magical practice, make you more in tune with your intuition, and even have you feeling more organized and confident with your life and spiritual journey.

A grimoire is basically a book that houses your spells, rituals, and everything to do with your witchcraft practice. Starting one is such a wonderful project that really lets you think about your practice, and organize your thoughts around it, which may be unfocused. If you love organization, you’ll love creating a grimoire for yourself. It can be divided up into different sections for each area of your practice, can have tabs, title pages and you can even be colour coded it if you want. Here are some things you can house in your grimoire:

  • Spells & Rituals (including ingredients used, outcomes and result, atmosphere, etc.)
  • A dedication or blessing for your grimoire
  • Moon Phase Information
  • A detailed description of your own practice
  • Elemental Correspondences
  • Crystal, Herb, and Oil Correspondences
  • Colour Magic
  • Banishing, Cleansing, and Grounding Practices
  • Your Personal Astrology or Numerology
  • Sections on different types of witchcraft you study (kitchen, green, cottage, etc.)
  • Shadow Work
  • Dream and Astral Work
  • Folklore & Mythology
  • Divination Practices
  • Self-care and Wellness Magic
  • Potion Making
  • Candle Magic
  • Information on the Wheel of the Year
  • Manifestation
  • Your own personal experiences

Every grimoire is incredibly personal and unique. Yours should reflect your own practice, creativity, and elements that resonate with you on your path. Your grimoire will evolve and grow with you as you move along this life long magical journey.

Alternatively, or in addition to, you could start a new journalling practice that centers on the more spiritual aspects of your life such as shadow work, manifestation, or dream journalling. You could even keep separate journals for different topics.

If you love writing, going internally to gain wisdom, getting creative and being organized, this one is probably really going to resonate with you. As someone who loves to write and be organized, it’s one of my favourites!

Now if you’ve been on the blog or my socials before you will know what an enthusiast I am for kitchen witchery. It’s a huge part of my practice! If you are someone who already enjoys cooking or baking, why take it a step further and turn those delicious creations into magical rituals? There is something really special in the act of creating a cake filled with joyful energies or some oatmeal chocolate chip muffins baked with the intention of abundance.

It’s an incredibly fulfilling and an effective way to connect with the elements, add magic into your daily life, and help to manifest your intentions through the energy of food.

  • Include seasonal ingredients into your recipes like berries in the summer, pumpkin in the fall or pomegranates in the winter
  • Use the least processed ingredients possible. Example coconut or date sugar as opposed to white table sugar. The less process, the more energy the ingredient will hold
  • Make special seasonal bakes for the sabbats, maybe lemon loaf for the spring equinox, lavender blueberry muffins for summer solstice, or pumpkin cookies for Mabon.
  • Choose ingredients that match your intentions at the time. Example if you are focusing on love choose to bake things with chocolate, vanilla, or strawberry
  • Use dedicated kitchen tools (pots, spoons, bowls) for your magical creations
  • Stir things clockwise to draw in positivity and things you are wanting more of in your life and counter clockwise for releasing or banishing
  • Turn things into a ritual by adding spells, speaking your intentions, lighting a candle, or having matching crystals in your space. Make it an experience!

I have lots of kitchen witch recipes here on the blog, like this Lemon Lavender Loaf (love this one for Ostara!) for if you would like some further inspiration.

Who doesn’t love a little crafting and potion-making in their spare time? There are so many things you can DIY that have a witchy theme. Here are some ideas: You can blend your own face serums, make your own herbal tea blends,, craft some energetic mists, or make some custom bath salts for yourself infused with intentions.”

  • Face Serums
  • Lotions and Creams
  • Magical Mists and Sprays
  • Candles
  • Bath Salts
  • Herbal Tea Blends
  • Sew tarot, rune, or spell pouches
  • Craft Oil Blends
  • Potpourri
  • Floral Wreaths or Crowns
  • Corn Dollies
  • Brigids Cross
  • These things can all be infused with your own personal intentions
  • You can make things you will actually use like body sprays or skin care products and making your own is easier on your bank account.
  • You will cut down on your toxic intake. When you make things like this on your own you know everything that goes into them and the ingredients will be all natural.
  • You can use the things you craft directly in your riutals and magical practices.
  • You can do special crafts to align with the Sabbats. Floral wreaths or crowns for Beltane as an example.
  • You will learn and develop so many useful skills by doing this

A wonderful place for DIY ideas and inspiration is Pinterest! You can also buy books or watch videos to learn some additional skills. This is one you can really get creative and have some fun with! Some of my personal favourite witchy crafting comes in the form of beauty products and magical mists and oils. So fulfilling and fun! And I love that I can use these things I craft myself as part of my magical practice as well.
